Competition Gartenstadt Allendorf. In collaboration with Studio Julien Kiefer and tropos Landschaftsarchitektur. 4th rank.
The garden city idea is based on the positive relationship between man and nature, defined by precise articulation of the transitions from inside to outside and the arrangement of private and public spaces.
In the living space, this threshold is articulated via a secondary structure of balconies & loggias that interlock with the green space. The three residential blocks are reconfigured into a ensemble that responds specifically to its neighbourhoods. The landscaping follows the idea of soft thresholds and develops from an intimate space into a lively Central Park.
An ensemble of three independent volumes is proposed, creating anintimate and neighbourly space.
Three passageways of different quality are created:
A generous and inviting entrance via the 'Grüne Mitte', a framed opening for direct interconnection to the northern neighborhood and a passage to integrate the eastern neighbourhood.
Each of the three structures takes on specific functions and tasks according to its respective urban location.
The guiding principle of the energy and sustainability concept is to achieve the highest energy efficiency while minimizing the use of technology and reducing the ecological footprint of the building's construction. Concrete is employed sparingly for this purpose. All three buildings are designed as "Schottenbau" with solid reinforced concrete skeletons as partitions and non-load-bearing, highly insulated prefabricated exterior walls in wood panel construction.Through this construction principle, almost all living spaces (with exceptions in the "Riegel") are determined, creating well-oriented living and kitchen areas flanked by bedrooms and bathrooms. A highly rational and flexible primary structure is expanded and individualized through a space-defining secondary structure. The logic of the through-connected partitions, oriented in two directions, allows all gable sides in the ensemble to be greened, creating inviting inner courtyard entrances while avoiding unpleasant vis-à-vis moments.
